Life Beyond Boundaries is an intellectual memoir. It mostly describes Anderson’s life, but its main focus is an attempt, by Anderson, to account for his own ideas and his own intellectual development. Anderson’s life was varied for an academic, even for one who specialised in politics. In his suitably titled memoir ‘A life beyond boundaries’, 2 Anderson recounts his scholarly journey that started off as a teaching assistant at the Department of Government in Cornell University in 1958. He went on to become a Southeast Asianist and later, to his own surprise, earned global renown as a theorist of nationalism.

Pleased to have illustrated the wraparound cover for Gerakbudaya's edition of 'A Life Beyond Boundaries', the memoir by Benedict Anderson. He wrote 'Imagined Communities', probably the most widely read text on nationalism, and his life's work demonstrates the inseparability of politics and scholarship. The concept of an insular frog beneath a coconut shell comes from a Malay proverb ('katak di bawah tempurung') and is used in the book.
